Live at New Skool Rules 2024

Get ready for take-off with Carina & The Jetsetters!

Blending funk/soul, Spoken Word and Carribean riddems with stories of the cities of Rotterdam and The Hague (NL) , their sound is compared to a touch of nostalgia, a summer vacation, and the love child of Sade, Amy Winehouse and Prince, topped off with some Lenny Kravitz.

Carina Fernandes is a bubbly Renaissance woman whose creativity is a vehicle of revolution. She is known for her effervescent energy – radiant Caribbean soul and warmth! Her work focuses on initiating intergenerational conversations for a more inclusive world and she is the pilot of Carina & The Jetsetters.

After pllaying their first two gigs in the Doelen and they are about go on their first UK Tour. In September they will participate in the South Holland preliminary round of the Grand Prix (Grote Prijs Rotterdam) and their debut album will be released soon.

When Carina & The Jetsetters were invited to a showcase festival in Glasgow,
fron twoman Carina said, "If we have to travel through London anyway, why not make a little tour out of it?" The six-piece band got excited and initially expected one or two extra shows. It eventually turned into seven shows spread over a week and a half, from August 19th to September 2nd. .

A tour sounds super cool, of course - but we mostly play our music live. We'd like to record it so you are able to choose when you would like to enjoy it - on your way to school or work, maybe during cooking or on a sunday afternoon in the parc.

Nothing But Freedom

Nothing But Freedom is inspired by the Oceanië collection in the Depot of Wereldmuseum Rotterdam. During the research phase, Carina Fernandes and Bastet Black learned most of the items were from West-Papua - currently still fighting for their independence due to a Dutch colonial past.

The aim was to make to make a song for the everyday - a song so accessible you wouldn’t think it is about decolonization. The visual translation is a reference to this mutual past and centers how we - as children of the colonial diaspora - connect within this history. Often the East and the West are separated narratives while, if researched, they seem like two sides of one coin.

The music video is a dedication to all Children of colonial diaspora all over the world and those who still face oppression today due to this history."
